Yes, it is possible now. Instant messengers are evolving. From plain text conversations to custom backgrounds and avatars and the voice chat services. New features recently launched by Skype (a little piece of software that lets you make free calls to anyone else on Skype, anywhere in the world) will give you the capability to search for a local businesses. This features is called SkypeFind basically a collection of businesses listed or reviewed by the Skype community. This might be the next social bookmarking or whatever term is that.

SkypeFind works like a search engine for the users for finding and/or reviewing local businesses. You can also add or edit listings or even post comment to a particular business listed. This is becoming more exciting because the community can increase the listing by adding their business names or sharing businesses and services they’ve tried. They can have their reviews, let others read it and even add reviews to existing businesses posted.

SkypeFind is only available in the latest released of Skype. You can download here and try it out.

Certain web developers and web designers have a resistance towards using W3C web standards. Common arguments are its too difficult, It works anyway and the tools I use create invalid code.

It’s easy to react emotionally and build up a resistance towards learning something new and abandoning techniques you know and feel comfortable with. However, if you look at the situation logically you will see that there are many benefits to learning and using web standards. A few examples:

Improved Accessibility
Firstly, accessibility to a wide audience is guaranteed. By carefully structuring and coding your web site, we can ensure that people with visual disabilities can access the content on your site just as able-bodied people can. In practice, this means the code we use to write the pages of your web site can be understood by screen-readers and modern web browsers alike, with no loss of context or message.

Compatibility with future web browsers
When you use defined standards and valid code you future-proof your documents by reducing the risk of future web browsers not being able to understand the code you have used.

Faster download and rendering of web pages
Less HTML results in smaller file sizes and quicker downloads. Modern web browsers render pages faster when they are in their standards mode than when they are in their backwards compatible mode.

Better accessibility
Semantic HTML, where structure is separated from presentation, makes it easier for screen readers and alternative browsing devices to interpret the content.

Better search engine rankings
The separation of content and presentation makes the content represent a larger part of the total file size. Combined with semantic markup this makes it easier for search engines like Google and Yahoo to index your page, and provide more accurate search results determined by the actual content on the page. Google and Yahoo both reward websites that are built using structural and semantic markup.

To give an example, this web site is built using standards compliant XHTML and CSS. Viewing some of the referring page details (how people find this web site), shows that many visitors come through Google and Yahoo.

Simpler adaptation
A semantically marked up document can be easily adapted to print and alternative browsing devices, like handheld computers and cellular phones, just by linking to a different CSS file. You can also make site-wide changes to presentation by editing a single file.

Web standards can save time and money for web site creators, and provide a better experience to the web site’s visitors. Besides, web standards are the future. If you’re not using web standards already, now is the time to start, or you will risk being left behind.

Validation
Validation is the process of controlling that a document obeys the rules of the language used in the document. You can compare it to checking a text for spelling and grammatical errors.

Validation is an important part of web development. Many errors that are hard to find are discovered during validation. An error can be as trivial as a typo, or as serious as an element or attribute being used in an invalid way.

Unfortunately, many people don’t validate their documents. Some people may not know about validation, others forget to validate, and there are those who intentionally avoid validating. This situation can largely be blamed on web browser vendors. Most web browsers attempt to interpret invalid HTML as best they can, and try to guess what the author’s intention is, instead of displaying an error message. This behavior has led to the sloppy markup that is very common today. The problem with that kind of markup is that it gives unpredictable results and relies on the error handling of web browsers.

There is no reason not to validate your HTML and CSS. On the contrary. There are only benefits.

The W3C was started in 1994 to lead the Web to its full potential by developing common protocols that promote its evolution and ensure its interoperability.

What is the W3C?

   1. W3C Stands for the World Wide Web Consortium
   2. W3C was created in October 1994
   3. W3C was created by Tim Berners-Lee
   4. W3C was created by the Inventor of the Web
   5. W3C is organized as a Member Organization
   6. W3C is working to Standardize the Web
   7. W3C creates and maintains WWW Standards
   8. W3C Standards are called W3C Recommendations

How The W3C Started

The World Wide Web (WWW) began as a project at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), where Tim Berners-Lee developed a vision of the World Wide Web.

Tim Berners-Lee - the inventor of the World Wide Web - is now the Director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

W3C was created in 1994 as a collaboration between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), with support from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) and the European Commission.
Standardizing the Web

W3C is working to make the Web accessible to all users (despite differences in culture, education, ability, resources, and physical limitations)

W3C also coordinates its work with many other standards organizations such as the Internet Engineering Task Force, the Wireless Application Protocols (WAP) Forum and the Unicode Consortium.
W3C is hosted by three universities:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the U.S.

The French National Research Institute in Europe

Keio University in Japan

W3C Members

Because the Web is so important (both in scope and in investment) that no single organization should have control over its future, W3C functions as a member organization.

Some well known members are:

BM

Microsoft

America Online

Apple

Adobe

Macromedia

Sun Microsystems

The Full List of Member Organisations includes a variety of software vendors, content providers, corporate users, telecommunications companies, academic institutions, research laboratories, standards bodies, and governments.
W3C Recommendations

The most important work done by the W3C is the development of Web specifications (called “Recommendations”) that describe communication protocols (like HTML and XML) and other building blocks of the Web.

Each W3C Recommendation is developed by a work group consisting of members and invited experts. The group obtains its input from companies and other organizations, and creates a Working Draft and finally a Proposed Recommendation. In general the Recommendation is submitted to the W3C membership and director, for a formal approval as a W3C Recommendation.

UK Government recommendations:

‘A great deal can be achieved by reading through the W3C guidance on this topic (accessible website design)’

Guidelines for UK Government websites
Illustrated handbook for Web management teams

A lot of businesses are shifting to Web2.0. Is it a new technology?

I think not, Web 2.0 is just that a collaboration of people who loved the web since it born. It is same web harnessed by everyone (both the exploiters and the users). The web did not evolve but we did. The web’s primary purpose is to connect people and it did. Web 2.0 connects people in the same way it did with the first web. Web 2.0 is just the web, the aged web. And who made it aged? It is us who uses it. We used it and we always find things around how could we use it in connecting people.

I found this video from youtube that might give you a clear picture of the Web 2.0
